The US ambassador to Somalia, Donald Yamamoto, has given an assurance that his country will help Somalia to repay its outstanding debt, a move that will greatly boost infrastructural development in the Horn of Africa nation.
The ambassador made the commitment yesterday during a consultative meeting in Mogadishu on economic growth and employment. He further pointed out that by strengthening the economy, Somalia will be able to achieve security and political stability: “We see hope. I think, for the first time in a long time, we’re seeing opportunities that are expanding and growing.” Mr Yamamoto added that USAID supports large Somali companies, working in the areas of fish, electricity and other important economic drivers in the country.
The US envoy also noted that Somalia was famous for its production of fruits and vegetables. The envoy, who was appointed as US ambassador to Somalia on November 2018, is the second ambassador to Somalia since the U.S formally recognised the Somali government in 2013.
