SRCC Madeira meets Somali civil society actors to discuss areas of collaboration

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of theAfrican Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeirayesterday met civil society actors to discuss areas of collaboration with AMISOM.Ambassador Madeira met representatives of the civil society under their platform,Somali Non-State Actors (SONSA).The meeting which took place at the AMISOM Mission headquarters in Mogadishuwas also attended by senior AMISOM officials including the Head of Mission Support,Maj. Gen. Fidza Dludlu.SONSA brings together civil society organisations in Somalia to articulate issues onpolitics, social, economic, security, governance, and public participation.Ambassador Madeira, informed the civil society leaders about the possible areas ofcollaborat
ion, especially working with AMISOM’s civilian component which runs
programmes on stabilisation and early recovery across Somalia by implementingQuick Impact Projects (QiPs).The AMISOM civilian component also carries out programmes that include theprotection of women, children, and vulnerable groups as well as the promotion ofhuman rights and gender issues.Ambassador Madeira told the civil society actors that AMISOM was not in Somalia tosubstitute the Somalia government; but to restore peace, stability and empowerSomalis to take over security responsibility from AMISOM.The leader of the civil society delegation, Osman Moallim, commended AMISOM forthe strategic support to the Federal Government of Somalia and the federal memberstates to advance peace and security.
He also asked AMISOM to tap into the local knowledge and expertise of civil societyorganisations under SONSA to reach local communities.
“It is important for us to collaborate with AMISOM through sharing information to
enable AMISOM to achieve its mandate and coordinate efforts to maintain peace
and stability,” Osman added.
