China Pledges To Support Somalia’s Health Sector

The government of China has pledged to support Somalia’s health sector following a meeting in Mogadishu. Somali Minister for Health, Fowziya Abdikar Nur on Tuesday held talks with   Chinese Ambassador Qin Jian at Banadir Hospital. During their tour, the officials visited various departments of the hospital before meeting with the hospital’s administration. Later on, the two officials discussed means to expand Chinese support to the hospital and Somalia’s health sector as well. Ambassador Qin Jian said China was keen on continuing Somalia’s recovery process and supporting it in various sectors including the medical sector.

The ambassador hailed Banadir hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in the capital, for what he termed as their remarkable contribution in providing health services to over millions of Somalis over the years. The Banadir Maternity and Children Hospital is a teaching hospital in the Wadajir District of Mogadishu, Somalia. The few amenities that have escaped the war, like Banadir hospital, run on a shoe string budget and struggle to cope with demand. Built in 1977 as part of a Chinese development project, it became the nexus of a humanitarian crisis in 2011.

Most public amenities in Somalia are either totally destroyed or run down due to the years civil war that has left many ordinary people without access to the much-needed healthcare
