Jubaland Minister Arraigned In Mogadishu Court Over Rights Abuses

Jubaland state’s Minister of Security, Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur Janan, today appeared before the Banadir Regional Court in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, to answer charges of crimes against humanity he allegedly committed in Gedo region in 2015. Abdirashid Janan and Bulle Adan Mohamed, the army commander of Dolo and Beled Hawo towns, were both arraigned before the Banadir regional court today. The court had previously dismissed all charges against Janan but he was returned to the court. The UN’s Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group has accused Abdirashid Janan of murder, torture, unlawful detention and committing illegal acts between 2014 and 2015. Rights watchdog Amnesty International welcomed the arrest of Janan, saying he was reasonably suspected of criminal responsibility for crimes under international law and other serious human rights violations, including obstructing humanitarian assistance. Abdirashid Nur Janan who was arrested on 31st August 2019 by security forces in Mogadishu while on a transit flight to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
