Somali president appoints new army commanders

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has appointed a new deputy chief of staff of the armed forces and new commander of the ground forces.

A decree from the president’s office on Thursday appointed Brig Gen Mohamed Ali Bariise as the new deputy chief of staff of the army and Brig Gen Abdihamid Mohamed Dirir as the new commander of the ground forces.

Brig Gen Barise, a military intelligence officer is described as a competent man who is active in the military, having trained several times outside the country, and has acquired military knowledge in several countries.

The appointment completes the leadership structure of the Somalia Armed Forces, since the changes that were made in August when a new army chief was appointed.

The move implies that the leadership of the Armed Forces is entrusted to young officers who have experience in military service and foreign training.
