Djibouti President Says Somalia Is Capable Of Taking Over Security Responsibility From AMISOM

The Somali government has the ability to take over the responsibility of its own country, from the AMISOM forces in Somalia. President Ismail Omar Guelleh has commended Somali government of its efforts to rebuild Somali Nation Military (SNA). “Somalia has the ability to take over security responsibilities of its territory. The progress that the government achieved so far, is commendable in order to maintain peace in Somalia at this time,” said the president.

The president said AU forces have helped Somalia to reach a stage to have its own military. The president dispelled concerns that the country may not be prepared to take on the duty. “I think the time is right that Somalia should be given the responsibility so that the country would not have to be dependent on troops from foreign countries forever,” he said. The process of handing over the responsibility of some forward-operating bases to the SNA has already begun.

AMISOM has developed a conditions-based transition plan to transfer the national security responsibility from, the AU forces to Somali National Army, guided by the rule of law and respect for human rights.
