Somali state leader says country cannot hold one person, one vote election in 2020

President of the South West State of Somalia has shared his views on the 2020/21 national elections in the country.

In an interview with Somali cable TV, Abdiaziz Hassan Lafta Gareen, said that the country cannot hold a one person, one vote election in its current state.

He said security and population census are some of the biggest obstacles facing a one person, one vote election.

He pointed out that there has so far been no voter census exercise, adding that security must be ensured throughout the country as well as election centres. A lot remains to be done about this as well, he said.

He proposed that until those goals are achieved, the 4.5 clan power sharing system should be used in the election.

The international community is pressuring political stakeholders in the country to hold a one person, one vote election by 2021, when the mandate of the current government ends.
