During the late evening of 6 February 2020, the Federal Government of Somalia, in coordination with the United States Military and Federal Member States, conducted two airstrikes on al-Shabaab militants in the city of Jilib. The first airstrike targeted an al-Shabaab compound inside the town while the second targeted a group militants near the city. one al-Shabaab operatives was killed and two were wounded in the strikes.
This operation and other recent battlefield successes show the FGS and its U.S. partners’ resolve in bringing to justice those who terrorize and exploit the citizens of Somalia and its East African brothers and sisters.
The past couple of weeks have seen a series of precision airstrikes into the al-Shabaab stronghold of Jilib. This may indicate a growing vulnerability of al Shabaab leadership even in the towns and villages they control.
The FGS and the United States goes to great lengths in limiting civilian casualties and adhering to the laws of armed conflict, which prohibit the targeting of civilians.
At this time, no civilians are assessed to have been killed or injured in the attack.
